The cost of migrating a whole team to a custom thing can be expensive and time consuming. I'm definitely talking about this from the perspective of smaller / solo teams. But that said, speaking from experience, I know several middle-sized studios moving to custom engines because they have determined the potential risk of using proprietary engines to be too high, and the migration and learning costs to be worth it.
