In contrast, there are lots of other phone-home things I wouldn't call telemetry. Software update pings, for example. The publisher can derive data about this - in fact it's one of the only things Tor Browser 'collects' - but the purpose isn't to tell the publisher something, it's to get you the latest version and that's a direct benefit you gain. Firefox obviously has update pings, but it also has something called Remote Settings which is a tool to sync data to your browser for lots of other useful things. You phone home to get this data.
